Sprint announces LG Viper 4G LTE pricing and availability

gsmarena_001

This is hardly a surprise, given the fact that the first time we heard about this particular device was its actual unveiling during CES three months ago. Finally, Sprint Wireless announced the pricing and availability of the carrier's first LTE smartphone - the LG Viper 4G LTE.

The mid-range Android smartphone will be available for pre-order on April 12 for $99.99 with a two-year commitment, after a $50 mail-in rebate.

The above mentioned amount will get you a dual-core CPU, clocked at 1.2GHz, 4" WVGA screen, a gig of RAM, 5MP, and some eco-friendly cachet. The OS on tap will be Android 2.3 Gingerbread. NFC will also be on board alongside the LTE network connectivity.

All in all, the LG Viper 4G LTE can hardly qualify as the most memorable way to kick off the start of an LTE network. Hopefully, the smartphone's eco-friendly features will help it find its followers.

T-Mobile UK starts selling HTC One X and One S on April 5

big

Today T-Mobile UK announced that it will be joining O2 in offering the HTC hot duo, One X and One S, starting from April 5. The two smartphones are officially on sale from this morning and we already got a chance to play with the One X, but we are still a few days away from getting carrier-subsidized versions.

T-Mobile UK will be offering the HTC One X for free on a ?41 per month, 24-month plan, while the HTC One S will be free on a ?36 per month, 24 month plan. The carrier allows you to register your interest in the handsets, but strangely enough isn't taking pre-orders for either just yet.

According to the official press release though, you'll be able to purchase the phone in both the T-Mobile brick and mortar stores and its online shop, so you'll be free to choose where to get it.

So with O2 and T-Mobile already confirming the availability dates for the HTC One duo, we are looking at Vodafone to reveal the date when it will be honoring those pre-orders.

Sony Xperia S review: NXT of kin

The Sony Xperia S is the current champion of the NXT series and comes aptly armed with a tack-sharp 720p screen and 12MP worth of stills. It sets a new design trend for the Xperia line and brings massive improvements to it.

The Xperia S comes at a time of change in the Android world with quad-core processors and Ice Cream Sandwich looming on the horizon. The Xperia S is priced below those new-fangled flagships however, and in its range it's quite the fighter.

But while the OS update is just a matter of time, what most other competing phones don't have (and can't get via an update) is the 342ppi pixel density of the 4.3" 720p screen or the 12MP camera. Those things give it a leg up against outgoing flagships and even upcoming upper-midrangers.

The Xperia S is more than just the screen and the camera though. Here's the short version:

Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support3G with 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA4.3" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of 720p resolution (720 x 1280 pixels) with Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine; Scratch-resistant glassAndroid OS v2.3.7 Gingerbread, planned Android 4.0 ICS updateDual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion CPU, 1 GB RAM, Adreno 220 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260 chipset12 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and geo-tagging, Multi Angle shot1080p video recording @ 30fps with continuous autofocus and stereo sound1.3 MP front-facing camera, 720p video recordingWi-Fi b/g/n and DLNAGPS with A-GPS, GLONASS32GB built-in storagemicroHDMI port, dedicated TV launchermicroUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1Standard 3.5 mm audio jackStereo FM radio with RDSVoice dialingAdobe Flash 11 supportDeep Facebook integrationPlayStation Certified, access to the PS StoreAccelerometer and proximity sensorThe competition will soon have phones with quad-core CPUs......and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the boxDisplay has sub-par viewing anglesNo microSD card slotmicroSIM onlyShutter key isn't particularly comfortable

The Sony Xperia S is keen to add extra value in both hardware and software terms. NFC is picking up in popularity and the S comes with two smart tags in the box and extensive app support for them. The microHDMI port is next, which sorts out the need for an extra adaptor, and GLONASS support (on top of GPS) is good news for everyone who needs accurate positioning.

The 32GB of built-in storage is pretty sweet too - the memory is non-expandable, but it's as much as you're likely to get out of a microSD card anyway.

We've already reviewed the Sony Xperia S hardware, but we'll give it the once-over before heading for the software.

White Samsung GALAXY Note LTE gets released today by Telus, April 10th by Bell

Today, Canadian carrier Telus is expected to release a white version of the Samsung GALAXY Note LTE. According to a leaked copy of a memo, the same white variant of the Samsung GALAXY Note is supposed to launch via fellow Canadian mobile operator Bell on April 10th. Pricing will be the same as the Telus model which means that with a signed three-year pact, the white Samsung GALAXY Note LTE on Bell will cost you $199.99. Without your signature on the dotted line, the pale colored phablet will run you $729.99. Did we hear you say that you wanted the specs? We are happy to oblige. The device has that hefty 5.3 inch Super AMOLED display with resolution of 800 x 1280 and pixel density of  285 ppi. Under the hood is a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1GB of RAM on board. The 8MP camera on back captures video in 1080p at 30 fps. A 2MP front facing shooter takes self portraits and enables video chat. Yes, the SPen is included and there is LTE connectivity.

So how does the white variant of this phablet grab you? There is one place in Canada where you wouldn't want to drop your white Samsung GALAXY Note LTE, that being a snow drift, of course.
